The dangers of antibacterial products

About 10 years ago antibacterial cleaners were introduced into our homes as the cleaning Agent of choice. Although antibacterial cleaning Agents are not really a new idea, must be in hospital for some time to combat germs.

The first antibacterial products introduced to the public were kitchen and bathroom cleaning. Today there are over 700 products with antibacterial agents such as triclosan (a common ingredient) in antibacterial products. ThePublic is bombarded with advertisement for antibacterial products and cleaners. The latest products are containers for storage of food and plastic wrap. Unfortunately, people are buying these products thinking they were protecting their families from germs when in reality they are creating super-germs that are resistant to antibacterial products.

In addition, the use of antibacterial products has a negative impact on our environment. The United States Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) has registered triclosan as a pesticide and chemical formulation and molecular structure of this compound are similar to some of the most toxic chemicals on earth above them as dioxins and PCBs. The EPA has triclosan high scores both as a danger to human health and the environment. The toxin of antibacterial cleaning products can often be counter surfaces and appliances, you want your family, taking this toxin? Furthermore, the excessive use ofantibacterial products weakens the immune system that affect the natural process of inhibition of bacteria.

Santa Clara Basin Watershed Management concluded the following findings on the toxin Triclosan in 2006:

• The American Medical Association, did not support the need and efficacy of triclosan and other antibacterial agents in personal care products
• antibacterial agents and their degradation products are present in many surface waters tested in the United States, including SanFrancisco Bay
• One such agent, triclosan is acutely and chronically toxic to aquatic organisms
• Triclosan bioaccumulated in fish and human tissue
• Triclosan may degrade into other toxic compounds
• Triclosan may encourage antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria.
• Doctors suggest that the best germ fighting measure continues the true act of washing hands with plain soap, or for more security, alcohol or peroxide-based handDisinfectants

In conclusion, antibacterial products play an important role in providing a sterile environment. They are necessary in clinical and laboratory. However, antibacterial products should be at home, avoid, or at least modestly used. There are a lot to create safer alternatives that will not super germs worsen the quality of our waters and harm the overall health of the environment.
